Having the Hard Conversation About Delegation

There are situations where someone is doing exactly what has always made them successful, and it’s no longer enough for the role they’re in. Often, it shows up around delegation.
They’re capable, experienced, and used to being closely involved in the work. That’s part of why they’ve been successful, but as the role grows, that same approach can start to create limitations.
Conversations about this can be uncomfortable, mostly because they touch something that has been a strength. It helps to keep the focus on what’s changing.
Being clear about shifts without making it personal usually makes the conversation more productive. It also helps to understand what’s behind the hesitation. Sometimes it’s concern about quality. Sometimes it’s habit. Sometimes it’s not having a clear way to delegate without feeling disconnected. Talking through those concerns creates a starting point.
From there, it becomes more practical. What decisions can be handed off? Where can they step back? What support would make that easier?
It’s not an overnight change, but with some consistency, most people can adjust and often find that their role becomes more sustainable and more impactful as a result.
